Ceramic coating or exhaust wrap?
Both insulate the pipe. Only one of them lasts without trapping moisture against it.
What wrap does well
Exhaust wrap is fibre tape wound around the pipe. It is cheap, it insulates well, and you can fit it yourself in an afternoon.
Where wrap causes problems
Wrap holds moisture and road dirt against the pipe. On mild steel that speeds up rust, and on thin-wall headers the combination of heat and trapped moisture can shorten the life of the pipe. Wrap also frays, soon looks tired and has to be replaced.
What a coating does differently
A ceramic coating is bonded to the metal, so there is nothing to soak up water. It insulates without covering the pipe in fabric, protects the surface from oxidation and needs no maintenance. It also keeps its looks far longer than wrap.
When wrap still makes sense
For a quick fix, or on a part you plan to replace soon, wrap is fine. For a car you keep, race or show, a coating is the lasting solution.
